Pete Piszczek - Finsbury Park 1977

Deltic, Finsbury Park 1977

A few years ago I was browsing through a copy of Railway Magazine and I was stunned to see a picture of Finsbury Park in ruins, derelict. I guess it did not fit in well with all those high speed multiple units.

These pictures were taken in 1977 when the shed was 18 years old. The modern building was very compact having six three-loco roads under a 100+ foot span of steel and concrete. Finsbury Park was home to a number of London based Deltics, and several are pictured here. With the Westerns having just passed away, the Deltics were an obvious choice of attention. British Railways was hell bent on standardization, and the Deltics with their opposed piston Napier engines had to be on the hit list.

The first shot is actually the last taken that day- a Deltic charges though Finsbury Park station.
