I visited Swindon works four times during 1976 and 1977. Unfortunately I did not take notes on each visit so I'm not precisely sure as to the exact date that I shot this roll of film. Since D1023 is present, and already withdrawn for preservation, the date has to be post February 28th, 1977.
Included is a scan of the BREL letter allowing my compatriots and I to visit Swindon works. I was always impressed with BREL's willingness to accommodate 15-year old rail fans and provide a lengthy tour. In addition to a camera, I always took some basic tools and a roomy back pack for souvenirs. During the course of my visits I acquired a number of Western mementos including a Laycock-Knorr straight air brake, various gauges, engine start buttons and enough nuts and bolts to last a lifetime. Although souvenirs may not have been officially sanctioned by BR, the men who lead the tours had an appreciation for the Westerns, which were built at Swindon.
